Homes evacuated after Exeter bitumen fire at tyre plant

  • 6-3-2010

There was thick black smoke coming from the Exeter factory

Homes have been evacuated as firefighters battle to contain a fire at a bitumen and tyre plant in Devon.

The alarm was raised just after 1300 BST at the Colas plant in Tan Lane, Exeter.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said 15 crews are currently at the scene.

Witnesses have reported a series of explosions and flames leaping from the roof of the building. An exclusion zone has been set up.

A fire service spokesman said the evacuation and exclusion zone was necessary because of the risk of gas cylinders exploding.

No-one is believed to have been injured.
