Fire fighter Stuart Wilson from Gainsborough has been invited to The Fire Fighter Bravery Awards.

The Spirit of Fire Awards 2010 is a national award ceremony hosted by The Fire Fighters Charity.

Stuart is amongst four other fire fighters nominated for the Fire Fighter of the Year category.

The award is to recognise bravery within the fire community and dedication to The Fire Fighters Charity.

The awards take place on Friday 4 June, and recognise both the fire service and charitable achievement. Amongst the award categories is Fire Fighter of the Year: an award to a serving fire fighter who has performed an outstanding rescue or gone beyond the call of duty during a fire & rescue situation.

In February 2008, a crew was called to a road traffic collision, the car was on fire, and a heavy black plume of smoke could be seen from eight miles away. The crew were informed that someone was still trapped in the car and they knew they had to get to the scene quickly. Whilst still three miles away from the incident the crews received a message saying that a passer by had dragged the casualty from the burning car, it later became clear that the passer by was off duty fire fighter Stuart Wilson who had helped the passenger to escape.

Station Manager Baker said: "Thanks to fire fighter Wilson's bravery he almost certainly saved the casualties life and I would also like to thank him for communicating the rescue to control, this contributed significantly to the safety of the attending personnel."

Every year, thousands of fire fighters are injured whilst protecting the public. Every 30 seconds in the UK, fire fighters are called to an incident, putting their lives on the line, and often sustaining physical injuries whilst carrying out their duties. The Fire Fighters Charity is here for fire fighters during their times of need, and assists thousands of individuals every year, by providing pioneering treatment and support services. It costs over £9 million every year to keep the Charity running, and with no government funding, we are completely reliant upon donations from the general public and fire community.
