The heath fire started to spread on Friday

A fire that spread through heathland in Surrey has now damaged more than 1,600 acres (650 hectares).

Up to 100 firefighters are tackling the blaze on land owned by the Ministry of Defence for training exercises, between Chobham, Camberley and Lightwater.

A fire service spokesman said crews had been restricted because there is unexploded ammunition on the site.

The fire first broke out at 1530 BST on Wednesday but it started to spread on Friday.

Crews from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service are carrying out perimeter patrols in specialist four wheel drives.

Insp James Norbury, of Surrey Police, said: "There is no need for anyone to panic.

"The fire service is working to keep the blaze under control and will inform residents of any further specific actions they may need to take."
