Aid gets to Pakistan flood area as water level rises
- 5-18-2010
|
Relief agencies struggling to support thousands of villagers displaced by floodwater in northern Pakistan have delivered fresh supplies to the affected area. A landslide in January dammed the River Hunza and created a lake which is steadily deepening. There are now fears that the lake could soon break its banks and destroy many more villages. Thousands of people have been forced from their villages and the numbers are growing all the time. Some were displaced by the original landslide in January. But the water level has since continued to rise, and more homes have gradually been engulfed. The Pakistan Red Crescent Society is working with international agencies to run 10 camps. They are currently providing shelter to more than 5,000 people. Army called in Now they are trying to double capacity to prepare for new arrivals.
On Sunday they managed to deliver another convoy of relief to this mountainous region, including family emergency kits containing tents and food. That is enough to support a further 3,000 people. The focus now is on whether the lake could burst its banks once the seasonal rains start. They are due in the coming weeks. If that happened, more than 30 villages downstream - and as many as 30,000 people - would be affected. Army officials say they are trying to drain the swelling lake. Politicians are trying to reassure local communities that the chances of a breach are not high. But as the waters continue to rise, many people are afraid that this crisis could worsen. |
