Frosterley homes evacuated in gas blast risk

  • 5-17-2010

About 50 homes were evacuated when a gas cylinder was found at the scene of a garage fire in County Durham.

Police took 150 people to Frosterley's village hall early on Sunday after the fire service said the acetylene cylinder was at risk of exploding.

The flames at the garage in Westfield were extinguished but a cordon was expected to remain in place for up to 24 hours while the cylinder cooled.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is due to be launched.
