At least 28 wedding guests have been killed when their bus hit a power cable in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, according to police.

Passengers on the bus were electrocuted and died instantly, police said.

The electricity supply wire was overhanging the road in Mandla district when it was hit by the bus which was reportedly carrying 60 passengers.

Police say that at least 30 passengers are being treated in two hospitals for electric shock and burn injuries.

"The accident happened 475km (295 miles) east of Bhopal, the capital of the state," police chief KK Sharma told AFP news agency.

He said the incident happened when a metal cabinet on the bus's roof came into contact with the high-voltage power cable, electrocuting the passengers.

Most of the victims were women, police said.

It was the second such incident in India in as many days, correspondents say.

At least 10 people were killed in the eastern state of Bihar on Thursday when a truck carrying passengers touched a high-voltage wire.
