Date: September 29, 1999
FIRE SAFETY ON CONSTRUCTION SITES CODE OF PRACTICE

As all UK fire brigades are aware, the Fire Safety on Construction Sites Code of Practice document has now been adopted by the insurance industry and various safety organisations.

One of the main materials affected by the requirements are flame retardant temporary protection materials. These are required to be certificated by the Loss Prevention Council Board and approved to a standard of LPS 1207. Whilst flame retardant boards and polythenes have been made available over the last two years, flammable bubble wrap materials have continued to be used due to the fact that there was not an alternative.

This email announces the availability of CUSHION WRAP 1207, which is the first certificated bubble wrap to be made available to the construction industry. The certificate number for the product is 471a/01.

Date: September 23, 1999
I am looking to find a source for reflective rain wear suitable for firefighters engaged in non fire suppression activities, traffic directing and so forth. While I worked as a Full time firefighter in England (9 years ago) I obtained such a coat, mid thigh length, waterproof, dayglo yellow with reflective trim and removavble red panels with 'FIRE' printed in reflective lettering. However, that was a while ago, and now I am residing in the states and a volunteer with a US Fire Dept, and can not find anything close to what I described above. If anyone should know of a UK company that makes such an item please Email me with the company contact info.

Subject: Storz couplings query
Date: September 01, 1999
I would like to exchange information on using LDH with Storz couplings at pressures greater than 200 psi (maximum service test pressure). We have a need, in industry, to supply high volume foam delivery equipment at great distances through LDH with Storz couplings. We are experiencing failures of the couplings, and/or coupling seals, at pressures greater than 200 psi. Has anyone else experienced these types of problems? Has anyone found a workable solution, other than limiting length of hose lays to what can be supplied with 200 psi incoming pressures? I would appreciate any information exchange on this subject. Subject: Dateing extinguisher and drawings
Date: August 27, 1999
My company is currently working on an anti-fogging compound which we had originally intended for use with industrial eye protection. Since we began this project we have received a great deal of interest from a number of government bodies who see the potential of using this product to prevent misting problems with respirator visors. Is respirator visor or other eye protection misting as much of a problem with fire fighters as it seems to be with other professions? I would be grateful for any information on this issue from those who experience difficulties in the field.

I would stress that the product is non-flammable.

Many Thanks

Hello, My name is Simon and I work for a Housing Association as a Development Project Manager. I am currently completing a BSc in Building Surveying and am writing a dissertation about the Housing (Fire safety in Houses in Multiple Occupation) Order 1997.

In particular, I am examining the issues surrounding the fact that Leeds City Council are enforcing this Order on Social Landlords as well as private landlords (which in my opinion is a good thing).

I would like to get in touch with anyone who can give me information about this Order and the surrounding legislation.

Specifically I would like to know more about the standards in DOE Circular 12/92 (which I am finding difficulty getting a copy of). I am also keen to know if any one out there has done any similar research, e.g.. cost benefit analysis, comparison with existing regs and standards, conflict between landlords and councils.

Subject: Night light candles
Date sent: Tue, 24 June 1999
I am a Fire Investigator in the London Fire Brigade. For some years now I have been conducting research into fires caused by night light candles (sometimes known as 'tea lights'). The main issue is the fact that through user error and/or design and construction, the wax in these candles may reach its fire point. Where the candle is placed directly onto plastic furnishings such as TV and Hi Fi cabinets, baths and toilet cisterns it melts through the plastic and ignites it. I have statistics, research and anecdotal evidence from London and elsewhere in the UK and have recently submitted a full report to the Department of Trade and Industry for product control action to be considered. I would be grateful to hear of any further known research, publicity or serious incidents in the UK and overseas on this issue.

Date sent: Tue, 22 June 1999
I am doing an MSc in Computer Science and my final project is making a model of people evacuating a building in Virtual Reality. What I am interested in is people's behaviour during fire evacuation. How many (possibly in percentages) go straight for the door, how many stop to collect personal belongings, what is the recomended number of supervisors and security guards that can't leave until last? If you have any information at all about people's behaviour in these circumstances I would like to know it, or if you don't know do you know anyone who does? I am interested in this to make the model as accurate as possible with the view of making it usable as a designing tool to inspect fire safety of a particular building.

I am a first year engineering student at the Australian National University and I seek your assistance with technical detail in respect to the electronic structure of smoke alarms.

As part of the requirements for electrotechnology I have to write a technical essay and I have chosen the topic of smoke alarms. To allow me to undertake the technical requirements I need the circuitry diagram and as much technical detail about smoke alarms as you can provide. I have to describe the workings of the device in as much detail as possible and describe the technical components and particularly how the circuitry activates the device.

I would be most grateful if you could send me this information via email (if possible). Any internet sites that you know of that may contain the information I need would be appreciated. The information is only for my use for the purposes of the technical essay.

Thanking you in anticipation.
