ESTIMATED AVERAGE AMOUNT OF BRIGADE TIME
SPENT ON DEALING WITH FIRES OF DOUBTFUL ORIGIN

2.1 Brigade estimates of the percentage of time devoted to attending fires of doubtful origin covered a wide range from under 10% in some cases to 75% in respect of one metropolitan brigade. Most brigades, however, tended towards the lower end of the spectrum resulting in an average mean percentage of 17%. There appeared, in general terms, to be little demographic and regional variation in the percentages quoted.
