15. Although only two fire brigades in England and Wales claim to have officers wholly dedicated to fire investigation, a further twelve brigades employ designated fire investigation officers who additionally undertake other duties. In most brigades fire investigation is undertaken by teams of trained officers whose various duties include investigation among their tasks. Designation and training of a specialist fire investigation team and in particular the establishment of liaison with the police service can contribute greatly to the possibility of accurately identifying the cause of fires and, in the case of fires believed to have been started deliberately, should help the police bring offenders to justice.
