One dead in fire at village house

A man has died in an "avoidable" house fire in Llanybydder in Carmarthenshire.

Two fire crews from Lampeter were called to the blaze at Bro Einion in the village at 1601 GMT on Tuesday.

Crews are still at the scene and the cause of the fire is being investigated by the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Dyfed-Powys Police.

Chief Fire Officer Douglas Mackay said initial investigations suggested there was no working smoke alarm at the property.

He added: "Our hearts go out to those affected by this tragic incident.

"A fatality of this kind is horrendous and ultimately avoidable."

He appealed for people to make their homes safe through free home fire safety checks, adding there had been a "dramatic reduction" in the number of fire deaths across Wales in the last 10 years.
