Man quizzed over suspected arson

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following three fires in Manchester city centre.

Police received a call reporting that a man was behaving suspiciously on High Street in the early hours of Tuesday.

Officers found a fire in a multi-storey car park on High Street, where it is believed a car had been set alight.

A second fire was found in Brichin Apartments on Joiner Street and a third was on waste ground nearby. A man was arrested and is being questioned.

Greater Manchester Police said Brichin Apartments were evacuated and about 50 people were moved to safety but no-one was injured.

Several roads were closed to allow the fire service to bring the fires under control and for crime scene investigators to carry out initial work.

All surrounding roads have since been reopened.
