Fire prompts city road closures

Firefighters have been tackling a blaze in commercial premises above a shop in the Leith area of Edinburgh.

Lothian and Borders fire crews were called at 0600 GMT to the property on Constitution Street.

Nobody has been hurt in the incident but police blocked off the road and a diversion was put in place.

Five fire appliances were sent to the scene after a caller reported smoke coming from the second and third floors of the premises.

That number was reduced to two by late morning.

Specialist equipment has been used to try and cut through the frame of the large building.

Constitution Street, a major road through the area, was closed between Bernald Street and Queen Charlotte Street.

It reopened after almost five hours, however the closure caused local traffic disruption through the morning rush hour.
