Families rescued from block fire

About 40 residents had to leave their homes when a fire broke out in a tower block in west London.

Among them were five children who were carried down a ladder to safety from the third floor of the building in Gurnell Grove, Ealing on Monday night.

Fire crews were called to the 10-storey block at 2208 GMT where they found a blaze in the lift lobby and bin room.

Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters tackled the blaze which was under control by 2300 GMT.
