Burglars try to burn down house

Thieves set four fires in a South Tyneside house before making off with several items and a car.

Structural engineers are assessing the damage to the house, in Windermere Crescent, Hebburn, after the incident on Saturday afternoon.

Police condemned the actions of the raiders, who later dumped and torched the stolen blue Suzuki Swift in nearby Pine Street.

No-one was in the property at the time and police have appealed for witnesses.
