Factory fire sparks fumes alert

Residents in the centre of Halifax were warned to shut windows to avoid breathing in fumes from a factory fire.

Several streets in the St John's area of the town were closed on Wednesday morning as about 30 firefighters tackled the blaze in Hope Street.

A fire service spokeswoman said: "We're using foam on the fire, which creates carbonous smoke and this can cause respiratory problems.

"We're advising residents to keep their windows closed."
