Fire causes £1m worth of damage

An investigation has been launched into the cause of a fire in a row of houses in East Kilbride.

The blaze was reported at a new housing development in Blackbraes Road shortly after 0330 GMT on Tuesday.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said the estimated cost of the damage was believed to be in the region of £1m.

A spokesman said: "An investigation into the cause is underway. At this stage we are unable to confirm whether it was a wilful act or not."

Two buildings were completely destroyed and two others extensively damaged.

Det Con Ian Peebles appealed to anyone with information in relation to the fire, or who may have witnessed anything significant, to contact him at East Kilbride police station.
