Fire takes hold at pallet factory

An investigation has started after a fire at a pallet factory in Derbyshire.

Ten fire engines were sent to Smith's Pallets in Nottingham Road in Somercotes at about 1730 GMT on Saturday after dozens of calls.

Firefighters tackled the blaze, which has destroyed pallets and vehicles, for several hours. At one point, residents said they heard two explosions.

Owner Jonathon Smith said his business was open despite 60,000 pallets going up in flames at the yard.

No-one was injured in the fire but roads were blocked off around the site and residents were told to stay inside.

A spokesman from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said they did not yet know what had caused the blaze but an investigation was under way.
