Welcome to the FireNet (Vortal).
From these page you will be able to navigate through a number of different areas that have Fire as the theme.
History of the site
FireNet is a non profit site that was started up as a private data store for my personal Fire and Arson investigation reports and links for easy retrieval and archive searching. This then incorporated Fire Safety and Fire Engineering as separate subjects. All these subjects where first written using the Microsoft Help compiler and then when Browsers first started to take of it was transferred to html format.
A number of years ago FireNet was donated the domain fire.org.uk and the content has built up over time.
In the early stages of the site development the pages were written using Notepad, however the site development did not get the upgrade that it needed and the pages have got longer and no so easy to read. This page is the first step to making FireNet come up to date and incorporate the new technology that servers and browsers can offer.
Recent Developments
Over the past year a membership scheme was implemented to generate some
cash flow for server and other day to day costs. The members receive access
to a set of pages that have been build up over the years that include Fire
legislation, Papers and documents on various Fire related subjects and the
News archive of the BBC reports (14,000 to date).
You can get the above documents elsewhere on the net but the idea is that
FireNet can act as a time saver when it comes to searching for those documents,
and we can hopefully point you in the right direction.
The Future of FireNet
The future of FireNet is still sound, and with a supportive user strength of 60,000 visitors a month it is my prime task to make the site a better one for them to get at the information they require quickly and efficiently. The first stage of this redevelopment is to establish a template of pages so that any redevelopment and refinement in the future can be accommodated at little effort on my part.
The next stage is for a Database refurbishment so that the content can be held centrally and be inserted, changed and deleted by the FireNet members who have control over their entries.
The News records do need to be viewable by everyone and I hope that a sponsor will be able to assist in helping with the server costs so that I can bring this out of the members area.
If you think that you could
assist with the development of the FireNet site then please get in touch
with me so that we can discuss this area further.
