Brigade tackles false alarm calls

There has been a 43% cut in false alarm call-outs to business premises thanks to an initiative by Avon Fire Brigade.

Under the scheme, the owner of any building that has generated four or more callouts in the previous three months is contacted.

A fire officer will then visit the property and consult with the owner to examine the cause of the false alarms and help them resolve the problem.

The project has run since January and 80 buildings have been visited.

Chief fire officer, Kevin Pearson says in many cases the brigade are called to the same buildings, often in the early hours, to what turn out to be unnecessary false alarms.

He said: "We will be working closely with occupiers and managers to encourage ownership of the problem at the highest level.

"We want to see effective fire alarm systems doing the job they are supposed to - alerting us to a fire at the earliest opportunity."
