Fire service to send fewer crews

An East Midlands fire service is reducing the number of fire engines it sends out to automatic alarm calls.

Every year the fire service in Nottinghamshire responds to more than 4,000 automatic calls, most of which turn out to be false alarms.

The fire service has decided to send only one fire engine instead of three to each automatic alarm incident.

Fire officials said firefighters will also switch off their blue lights during non-emergency calls, such as cat rescues.

They say it is a sensible approach to improving road safety
