Blaze shuts Glasgow Central

Glasgow Central Station
All services from Glasgow Central were cancelled

Train services in and around Glasgow could be disrupted on Sunday morning after a major fire at a warehouse.

About 60 firefighters were called to the "very serious" blaze, which started at 1836BST and raged for hours, causing several explosions inside the building.

Railtrack ordered all trains to and from Glasgow Central Station to be stopped because smoke was obscuring signals.

A spokesman for ScotRail said that disruption could continue on Sunday as a result of the fire at the building in Kilbirnie Street.

'Shut down'

All services on the main line into the station were stopped at about 2200 BST.

The spokesman said: "Earlier on it was just the Cathcart Circle line that was affected, but just after 10pm there were some explosions inside the building and there was a fear some debris may have reached the tracks.

"Railtrack have shut down all the services now, so there is nothing on the main line into Glasgow Central Station.

"We are still able to run trains to Inverclyde and Ayrshire, but there are now worries that we might still be disrupted tomorrow."
